Customer Success is a somewhat new position in the technical world, but it is such a great name for the service it embodies. In addition to being a successful founder and CEO, I have been in charge of Customer Success a number of times. But to be honest, I originally had no idea what it meant. I was working at a cyber security startup where we were delivering a solution that was not quite ready for prime time. Our plan was to learn our customers’ requirements, then I would drive the development team to deliver on those requirements. I loved it because it was a great blend of technical and customer skills.
Turns out our customers loved it as well! The big lesson from this experience was it taught me that well intentioned engineers sitting around a conference table “imagining” what customers need is NOT what customers need. Customers need solutions specifically tailored to their unique businesses.
